To our C Ian McLaren School Community,

Two additional  cases of COVID-19 have been diagnosed in individuals who were within C Ian McLaren School.  As always, our thoughts remain with these individuals and their family, we wish them a safe and speedy recovery.

Out of respect to privacy and in accordance with AHS guidelines, we cannot disclose personal health information of any individual.  However, we are able to share that we learned of these positive COVID-19 cases the evening of SundayMay 2, 2021.  We understand that the individuals were last in the school on Wednesday April 28, 2021.  A number of the individuals impacted by these 2 new cases have already been directed to self-isolate, and their self-isolation dates will be extended by a few days as a result.

Due to the late hour and our inability to meet operational needs for tomorrow, we will temporarily be transitioning to online learning for tomorrow May 3, 2021.  The school will be closed to in person learning on that date.  Please know that we continue to engage and consult with Alberta Health Services and Alberta Education as these recent events cause concern.   We will provide an update to families on Monday May 3, 2021.

We understand and respect that this may be challenging for families and students.  Please know that throughout the pandemic, our decisions have been based on the priority of safeguarding the safety and wellbeing of students and staff as well as enabling a continuity of learning.  This decision is made through that lens and includes consideration of increasing case numbers at the school, numbers of students and staff currently self isolating, as well as Divisional capacity in meeting the operational needs of the school and  the system.

In past cases, we would notify a school community when a COVID-19 Variant of Concern (VOC) was identified within a school.  With the rise of the B.1.1.7 (UK) VOC across the province, Alberta Health Services has informed us that this notification will no longer be provided.  All other variants will continue to be shared.
